A FIELD GUIDE TO YOUR ATLAS

A little practice. A bigger world.

Learn the capitals at your own pace, then return to the map to see what you remember.

End either session whenever you like and review your answers. Your unfinished session and last 10 summaries stay in this browser. No account is needed; clearing browser data removes that progress.

WHAT’S IN THE QUIZ

195 countries. A few special cases.

The atlas includes the 193 UN member states, plus Vatican City and Palestine. Other regions stay neutral. Dashed lines mark disputed boundaries; the map is a learning tool and does not express a political position.

Some countries have more than one capital or a separate seat of government. For South Africa, the quiz accepts Pretoria, Cape Town, Bloemfontein. For Bolivia, it accepts Sucre or La Paz. Answer feedback explains these cases.

Answers ignore capitalization, accents and punctuation. Only listed capitals and registered alternatives are accepted; a different former capital is not automatically a valid answer. The downloadable dataset below lists each accepted answer and explanatory note.

BEHIND THE ATLAS

Open data, with context.

Country names, capitals and flags are based on mledoze/countries, with curated capital corrections. Geographic outlines and disputed boundaries come from Natural Earth (public domain), shown in an Equal Earth projection with D3.

The country database is shared under ODbL 1.0. This is a maintained learning dataset, rather than an official government register. You can inspect the capitals, accepted alternatives and special-case notes in the country dataset.
